A few years ago, I discovered an old composition notebook of mine that had little snippets of ideas that I had scribbled down. It was fun, interesting, and a little embarrassing to see what I had been working on back then! But it was a good thing to find this composition notebook because after doing a few years of the 40 Piece Challenge, I was feeling a little bit bored with playing. I decided to try a Creative Challenge instead. Forty pieces was kind of ambitious, but I decided I would arrange and compose some sheet music and see how much I could get done in a year.

What I discovered was that it is is a whole lot harder to write songs than it was to play them!!

A friend told me about SMP Press. They let self-publishers make their sheet music available to the public through their website. What is very cool about arranging with SMP Press: they have a special arrangement project where they own the rights to many of my favourite songs! When I am deciding what to arrange, sometimes the songs pick me instead of the other way around! Various songs catch my interest:

• music that has stood the test of time
• songs that resonate with and inspire people
• songs that uplift with their beauty or meaning
• music that has a universal appeal
• songs that can be used for many different occasions.
