Checklist for piano exams and recitals
Here is a handy checklist for piano exams and recitals to take the guesswork out of getting ready!
CHECKLIST FOR PIANO EXAMS AND RECITALS – BEFORE
For exams, mark the music you are going to perform with a paper clip or a sticky note so the Examiner can find it easily.
DO keep your nails trimmed!
DO make sure you have erased any pencil markings in your scores.
DO have several run-throughs and/or mock exams with your teacher beforehand. Practice walking up to the piano and finding your starting notes. For mistakes in run-throughs, practice moving forward as you would in a real performance. Then go back and work through problems.
DO make sure you have memorized the technical requirements – what is played hands together? hand separate? cadences? inversions? etc.
DO make sure you are completely comfortable with your songs! Any areas that cause discomfort should be slowed down and practiced separately until it is up to the same level as the rest of your song.
DO have places on every page that you can re-start from if you have memory problems.
CHECKLIST FOR PIANO EXAMS AND RECITALS – EXAM / RECITAL DAY
DO find quiet and relaxing things to do that day. Take a walk, stretch, do yoga, take a nap, meditate! Avoid vigorous exercise or things that will stress you.
DO mentally rehearse your music and review your music visually. Play through a few trouble spots if you need it, but resist the urge to play through your entire programme.
DO dress nicely. Make sure your clothing doesn’t interfere with your playing, or feel uncomfortable. And wear shoes that you can pedal with properly.
DO organize all your music and completed forms in one place, ready to go.
DO arrive at least 15 minutes early.
